At 44, Sumeet Hukamchand Mittal has lived a lifetimes’ worth of ups and downs and isn’t scared of much. Quoting from a book by Morgan Witzel, he says, “Adapters will succeed, and avoiders will fail. It is up to us which we want to be.” He wants his teams to imbibe this. “I have a bigger dream than what I’ve created. Maybe everyone can’t see it today, but I will make it a reality someday!”
So he’s multitasking, juggling verticals as he diversifies his immensely successful, seven year old production house, Shashi Sumeet Productions Private Limited, cofounded with his childhood sweetheart and wife, Shashi Mittal. SSPPL launched Shashi Sumeet Motion Pictures (2013), Qats Whiskers (2014) to produce commercials, and Shashi Sumeet Innovations (2015) which deals with advertising, creatives and events. Back from an exciting foray in the international TV market to launch a non-fiction division, Sumeet believes stories told from the heart are bound to connect with audiences wherever they may be.
Disarmingly honest, he chuckles as he remembers the day it struck him that what they were writing sitting in their living room was what over ten million people were watching on their TV sets every night. Today the Shashi Sumeet Group is the trusted partner for leading entertainment channels and are known for high production values, great storytelling and for having their finger on the pulse of the audience. In 2015 they churned out over 100 hours of quality content every month with three shows on the Star network, three on Sony/SAB and two on the Zee network.
A stickler for creative integrity, Sumeet says “It’s a rule my team and I live by. If something has been written, it will be executed as it has been written. If it cannot be executed the way it is written, it shouldn’t be in the script…” SSPPL’s long running hit soap, Diya Aur Baati Hum, which has been amongst the top rated shows since it launched in 2011 on Star Plus, made history recently as the government of Rajasthan renamed an actual street in Pushkar after the lane the soap’s lead characters Suraj and Sandhya live on. Hanuman Galli made the leap from reel life to real life in this case.
He believes that the movie business is a natural progression for the Shashi Sumeet Group. With one Marathi feature film, Rangkarmi, already produced, his eyes are on a Bollywood feature next. It seems nothing can stop him from getting there.
